Kicking off the second week of 12 Days of Happy Tails, we're looking back at Juno's (formerly Spottie) adoption story.

After arriving in New York from our partner shelter in Kentucky, this pretty lady with matted fur seemed sweet as pie but was also sluggish and uncomfortable.

Luckily our wonderful vet partner at Pure Paws Vet helped groom her and shave off the nasty mats tugging at her skin. While doing so, the vet discovered she had a wounded and infected leg.

Juno's wound was resistant to multiple treatments, making it a challenging recovery. Her foster parents, Elspeth and Bruce, were there for Juno through every surgery and helped to administer over 150 doses of medications! Through it all, Juno remained cuddly and good-natured.

On one of Juno and Elspeth's daily walks, they met Rob and Jac, who instantly noticed how friendly Juno was. Rob and Jac had been looking to adopt for a while but just hadn't found the perfect pup — it all changed that day!

Rob and Jac were aware of Juno's stubborn, drug-resistant infection in her rear left leg and were undeterred that it constantly oozed and required a lot of cleaning and care. They wanted to welcome Juno into their family, and soon Juno became their forever pup.

Not long after adopting Juno, they brought her to another vet appointment and soon discovered the cause of the infection.

A bullet had fragmented and lodged in various places in her leg. The biggest piece was right in the middle of her thigh, causing the infection.

After surgery, the bullet was out. It took another six weeks of antibiotics, but now fluffy Juno has a clean bill of health.

Rob says, "Even though she has been through quite an ordeal, she remains relentlessly happy and just wants to meet and be friends with anything that moves. She also seems to be becoming a favorite neighborhood pup among our local haunts. When we bring her to grab food, a handful of restaurant owners love to come out and say hi with lots of pets, which, of course, Juno loves."
